In a large saucepan over medium heat, combine 1 3/4 cups apple cider, 1/2 cup sugar, 3 cinnamon sticks and 4 whole cloves; cook until sugar is dissolved. Add 1 bottle (750 mL) dry red wine and heat through. Remove from heat. Cover and steep for 10 minutes; strain. Serve warm in cinnamon-sugar-garnished mugs.
Makes 7 3/4-cup servings.
